THE TRIAL
The State of Russia vs. Oleg Sentsov

"Stand-out title" (Screen)
"One of 10 Best Movies of Berlin Film Festival" (Variety)

Documentary by Askold Kurov, Estonia/Poland/Czech Republic 2017
Produced by MARX FILM and MESSAGE FILM

Oleg Sentsov is a Ukrainian filmmaker and native of Crimea. After Russia´s annexation of Crimea in May 2014, Sentsov was arrested by the Russian security agency, charged with planned terrorist attacks and transported to Moscow. In August 2015, despite insufficient evidence, the case inconsistencies and the key witness’s change of testimony, the Russian court sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

Director Askold Kurov follows the progress of the trial and attempts of Oleg’s family, friends and lawyers to save him from prison. Kurov’s investigation gradually reveals an absurd and frightening Kafkaesque story about how anyone can become a victim of a ruthless state machine.

Documentary by Sabine Krayenbühl & Zeva Oelbaum, US/UK/France 2016
Produced by BETWEEN THE RIVERS PRODUCTIONS

Letters From Baghdad is the story of a true original—Gertrude Bell—sometimes called the “female” Lawrence of Arabia. Voiced and executive produced by Academy award winning actor Tilda Swinton, the film tells the story of this British spy, explorer and political powerhouse who helped draw the borders of Iraq. Using never-seen-before archival footage of the region, the film chronicles Bell’s extraordinary journey into the Arabian Desert and the inner sanctum of British male colonial power. It is a unique look at both a complex woman and the tangled history of Iraq that is eerily current.

Moscow launches its Film Commission in Cannes

Moscow, one of the world’s most famous capital, announces the creation of the Moscow Film Commission. To be launched on May 20th 3PM on Roskino booth in Cannes, the new body  will support productions considering to shoot in Russia capital, and aims at increase Moscow’s profile as a tourism destination. Industry professionals and press members are welcome.

Its name can be read in the news around everyday, as it is already one of the very most famous city in the world: Moscow, capital of the Russian Federation.  First filming destination in its country, Moscow welcomes 50 to 60 features coming to shoots every year, both Russian and Foreign. In the recent years, their list included most of the biggest local hits, like The Irony of Fate 2, by Timur Bekmambetov, as well as Andreï Zviaguintsev’s Loveles, in Competition this year. And the strong presence of Russian cinema this year in Cannes, with 3 movies in Official Selection, relies on the dynamism of Moscow as a production center, as all the production houses of the Russian movies in the festival selections are based in the capital.

Reflecting its geopolitical dimension, Moscow has also been featured in many international thrillers such as the Bourne Supremacy and Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

But despite being the most populated city in Europe, Moscow, unlike Paris, London or New York, did not have a film commission, until this month. "I am convinced that today's Moscow very much deserves being featured in the movies. We are launching the Moscow Film Comission which will help organize shooting in Moscow, overcome administrative barriers, and provide consulting services for filmmakers, says Sergey Sobyanin, Mayor of Moscow. We will be happy to welcome international film crews on Moscow streets starting this year already".

The Moscow Film Commission also aims at boasting the city’s profile. "Over the past five years, Moscow has undergone a complete makeover, explains Alexander Kibovsky, Head of the Moscow Department of Culture: it has now plenty of well-groomed parks; new public spaces have been created; many squares, streets, and boulevards have been renovated; the historical center has been overhauled; and new, modern neighborhoods have sprung up across the city. The Russian capital now hosts major events in economics, athletics, and culture. In 2018, the city will welcome the World Cup.  We have a vested interest in seeing the modern Moscow on film as often as possible; we want it to be captured by filmmakers both local and foreign.

The MFC is also getting the support of Russian cinema promotion body Roskino, which is providing the new agency with its marketing expertise. “Personally endorsed by Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin, our initiative was to create in Moscow a cool, comfortable atmosphere where international crews would be welcomed and accommodated professionally––and we hope to see this idea flourish, over the next two years, into a full-blown institution like the  film commissions in Paris, London, and other major cities", notes Katya Mtsitouridze, Roskino’s CEO.

On May 20th 3PM, Russian Pavillion in Cannes (139, Village International Pantiero) will host the MFC presentation and press conférence, led by Vladimir Filippov, Deputy Director for the Moscow Department of Culture and Roskino CEO Katya Mtsitouridze.

Paris Mission Cinéma Head Michel Gomez and Film France’s CEO Valerie Lepine-Karnik will also attend, as well as Sigmund Elias Holm, Vice-Chairman of Association Film Commissioners International and Arie Bohrer, Founder of European Film Commission Network.

One of the industry's premier feature film financing and production companies will launch sales on two new productions of its own - Johnny Depp comedy drama RICHARD SAYS GOODBYE and Viggo Mortensen thriller UNABOMB, based on the real-life FBI hunt for the "Unabomber killer" in the nineties.

The company will also continue sales on two more imminent homegrown productions - noir thriller SERENITY starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jason Clarke and Uma Thurman and sci-fi romantic drama ZOE starring Ewan McGregor, Léa Seydoux and Theo James.

Aside from its own production activities, IM Global is one of the most active and high profile international film sales agencies in the industry. President of International Sales and Distribution Michael Rothstein and his team will launch sales on James McAvoy Bosnian wartime drama ESCAPE, Brian De Palma thriller DOMINO starring Nicolaj Coster-Waldau and will continue sales on currently shooting Keanu Reeves thriller SIBERIA.

Documentary MY GENERATION is a bold, colorful, musically driven look back at the impact of Britain's working class cultural revolution on the sixties narrated and presented by Michael Caine.

Most newsworthy of all perhaps is the company's launch of another documentary, Oliver Stone's THE PUTIN INTERVIEWS.  The three-time Academy Award® Winning director will be in Cannes to present select footage to international buyers in a private invitation only screening event. In tandem with the Cannes activity, IM Global Television is busy licensing rights to international broadcasters to air the interviews in close proximity to Showtime's broadcasts beginning June 12th, which promises to be a major broadcast and news media event.

Ford paid tribute to the company's Academy Award® Winning production head Greg Shapiro (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) and President of International Sales and Distribution Michael Rothstein saying "Few companies outside of the major studios have the level of sophistication that Greg and Michael's operations bring to us when it comes to packaging, producing and monetizing top tier star driven feature films. The next 12 months looks tremendously exciting for our film business."

Full details of the IM Global slate are below.

RICHARD SAYS GOODBYE

Written and to be directed by Wayne Roberts (Katie Says Goodbye), RICHARD SAYS GOODBYE stars three-time Academy Award® nominee Johnny Depp. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Loving, Sinister, I Think We’re Alone Now, Midnight Special) and Academy Award® winner Greg Shapiro (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) are producing the film.

When Richard (Depp), a world weary college professor, is given a life-changing diagnosis he decides to throw all pretense and conventions to the wind and live his life as boldly and freely as possible. With a biting sense of humor, a reckless streak, and a touch of madness, he binges through every vice - drinking, smoking, sex, and hurling blunt insults at anyone who annoys him, giving him more pleasure than he’s had in years.  His rollicking journey and bravura assault on the status quo as he runs out the clock leads him to come to terms with the truth and embrace the people he loves for a final hurrah.  RICHARD SAYS GOODBYE is a hilarious and devastating comedy drama about how one man decides to live life to the fullest at the very moment he’s faced with the end of his journey.

UNABOMB

Starring Two-time Academy Award® nominee Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic, Eastern Promises), UNABOMB will be directed by Robert Lorenz (Trouble With The Curve).

UNABOMB is the enthralling true story of one of the greatest manhunts in history.  FBI agent Jim Freeman (Mortensen) takes on the long unsolved case of the Unabomber, who terrorized Americans with sixteen bombings over the course of two decades. In an unprecedented show of dedication and determination, Freeman and his unconventional team travel the country piecing together a profile of the infamous hooded suspect. But the closer they get to narrowing down his identity, the more deadly and personal the attacks become in this gripping real-life thriller.

SERENITY

As their work progresses, their discoveries become more profound than they could ever have imagined.

Caught in Sarajevo as the city is turned into an explosive battleground, a professor (McAvoy) sacrifices his own safety to stay behind and continue teaching.  But as the massacre escalates, his window of opportunity to join his family is quickly closing and he must fight his way out amidst the turmoil.  The film is a tension-filled harrowing and heartbreaking tale about a man caught between dedication to family and country.

DOMINO

Directed by Brian De Palma (Mission: Impossible, Scarface, The Untouchables), DOMINO stars Nicolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones, Oblivion, The Other Woman) and six time Emmy® award nominee Christina Hendricks (Drive, The Neon Demon, Mad Men), is written by Petter Skavlan (Kon-Tiki, Sophie’s World) and produced by Peter Garde and Michel Schønnemann.

In this fast-paced thriller, legendary director Brian De Palma weaves a multi-national tale about Christian (Coster-Waldau), a Copenhagen police officer seeking justice for his partner’s murder by a mysterious man called Imran. In a world wracked by terror and suspicion, Christian and Alex (Hendricks), a fellow cop and his late partner’s mistress, embark on a mission to hunt Imran down, but are unwittingly caught in a cat and mouse chase with a duplicitous CIA agent who is using Imran as a pawn to trap ISIS members.  Soon Christian and Alex are racing against the clock – not only seeking revenge, but to save their own lives. From the frosty cities of Scandinavia to the sun-drenched landscapes of Spain, De Palma sets up a spectacular battle of multiple opposing forces and leaves the audience breathless until the climactic moment when we learn who will be the last person to survive.

SIBERIA

Directed by Matthew Ross (Frank & Lola) SIBERIA stars Keanu Reeves (The Matrix trilogy, John Wick franchise, Speed). Written by Academy Award® Nominee Scott B. Smith (A Simple Plan), the film is based on the treatment by Stephen Hamel and is produced by Hamel and Reeves of Company Films and Gabriela Bacher of Summerstorm / Film House Germany, Braden Aftergood and David Hansen.

An American diamond merchant travels to Russia to sell rare blue diamonds of questionable origin.  As the deal begins to collapse he falls into an obsessive relationship with a Russian cafe owner in a small Siberian town. As their passion builds, so does the treacherous world of the diamond trade from which he is unable to extricate himself. Both collide as the American man desperately looks for escape in a world with no exit.

MY GENERATION

MY GENERATION is directed by David Batty (Maggie and Me, The Cult of the Suicide Bomber) and written by

Emmy® award winner Ian La Frenais (The Bank Job, Across the Universe, Still Crazy) and Emmy® award winner Dick Clement (The Bank Job, Across the Universe, Still Crazy). Michael Caine, 14 time Emmy® award nominee Simon Fuller (American Idol, Pop Idol, So You Think You Can Dance), Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, and Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly serve as producers.

MY GENERATION is a perceptive and entertaining journey through the "Swinging Sixties" and the societal upheaval that still resonates today in the UK and around the world, told with film clips, archival footage, music of the era, and the participation of Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Mary Quant, Marianne Faithfull, and many other icons. Michael Caine, with his unique viewpoint and gifts as a raconteur, serves as our guide through the cultural revolution that rocked the world in the ‘60s with an insider’s unique, humorous and moving insights.

THE PUTIN INTERVIEWS

Written and directed by three-time Academy Award® winner Oliver Stone (JFK, Snowden, Born on the Fourth of July, Platoon, Midnight Express, Natural Born Killers), THE PUTIN INTERVIEWS is produced by Fernando Sulichin (The Untold History of the United StatesSouth of the BorderSnowden, Malcolm X), New Element Media and Rob Wilson.

With unprecedented access to Vladimir Putin's professional and personal worlds, Oscar®-winning writer and director Oliver Stone interviewed the Russian leader more than a dozen times over the course of two years, most recently in February following the U.S. presidential elections.  Since first becoming the president of Russia in 2000, Putin has never before been asked such deeply probing questions nor spoken at such length nor in such detail to a Western interviewer, leaving no topic off limits.  In this riveting documentary, provocateur Stone takes us behind the closed doors of the Kremlin and Putin’s official residence outside of Moscow to crack open Putin’s icy facade with surprising results.  An important, historic and entertaining not-to-be missed documentary.

40 years after his iconic debut on the Croisette, Cannes Film Festival veteran Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to return with the striking documentary Wonders of the Sea 3D.

Schwarzenegger alongside the film’s director and well known explorer and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau will introduce Wonders of the Sea 3D at a special screening on Saturday 20th May at the Olympia 2.

Joining Schwarzenegger and Cousteau will be fellow producer François Mantello and the co-director Jean-Jacques Mantello, the distinguished underwater explorers and filmmakers who founded the cutting-edge 3D filmmaking company 3D Entertainment Films in 2001. Acclaimed underwater Cinematographer Gavin McKinney will also join the team in Cannes.

Conquistador Entertainment, helmed by President Pascal Borno and Chief Operating Officer Alain Gillissen, is handling worldwide sales for the spectacular underwater 3D film.

“3D Entertainment Films has produced a breathtaking and important film and we are delighted to be in partnership with them to bring Wonders of the Sea 3D to a global audience,” said Borno. “It is an honor to work with so many acclaimed professionals such as Jean-Michel Cousteau, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Jacques and Francois Mantello behind this incredible film that is dedicated to visual excellence and a message of beauty and survival.”

Thanks to new breakthrough 3D filming techniques, millions of viewers will dive into a new and virtually unknown underwater world without ever getting wet! Directed by Jean-Michel Cousteau and narrated by Arnold Schwarzenegger, WONDERS OF THE SEA 3D is a visual feast with an important message, which will make audiences of all ages fall in love with the ocean and ultimately make them want to protect it. From Fiji to the Bahamas, Jean Michel Cousteau and his children Celine and Fabien embark on a voyage to discover the ocean as never seen before and learn more about the threats that put our ocean at risk.

This is the second-time Arnold has embraced Cannes to support a film close to his heart. Wonders of the Sea 3D marks the anniversary of Arnold’s iconic Cannes debut in 1977, where he flexed his world-famous physique on the Croisette to promote weightlifting documentary Pumping Iron.

Morning After, a bold and playful drama about sexual fluidity is being showcased in the Creative Minds Shorts Block during the Festival de Cannes.   Morning After directed by award-winning filmmaker Patricia Chica, written by Kristian Hodko and produced by Patricia Chica and Byron A. Martin has been selected to be a part of the 2017 Creative Minds - Festival de Cannes – Shorts BlockThe Creative Mind Group, founded by Rob Ford, has curated a special presentation of the best international short films at the film market and has included Morning After in their Cannes' lineup.

SCREENING

May 26th, 2017 at 8:30 p.m.

Palais des Festivals, Theatre Olympia 2

Cannes, France

In the presence of the cast and crew

Morning After is a bold and playful drama that explores the subject of sexual fluidity and human desire. This poignant and moving coming-of-age tale perfectly captures the challenges and tribulations of five friends who decide to explore their sexuality and realize that they may not fall within societies' clean-cut lines.

“I wanted to speak about human connection, energy and sexual enlightenment from a fresh perspective other than the LGBTQ or heterosexual’s points of view. I wanted to make a film about desire and arousal that would go beyond the conventional physical realm... a deeper and perhaps more spiritual approach to sexuality, self-expression and self-acceptance. Morning After presented the perfect opportunity for me to hit all of these narrative targets in one single project,” says director Patricia Chica.

Morning After stars five bright rising actors – Thomas Vallières (Game of Death), Zoé de Grand Maison (Orphan Black), Joey Scarpellino (The Parents), Jordana Lajoie (Patrice Lemieux 24/7) and Kristian Hodko (The Howling: Reborn) who also wrote the script.

“I don’t think sexual fluidity is such a new thing. Be it for religious or historical reasons, it’s something that we’ve blocked off,” adds lead actor Thomas Vallières who is presently doing a masters degree at LAMDA, the prestigious drama school in London, England.

Morning After is directed and edited by Patricia Chica; Written by Kristian Hodko; Executive Producers: Marc Carle and Juan Grey; Producers: Patricia Chica (Quebec) and Byron A. Martin (Ontario); Co-Executive Producers: Raj Maan, Jessica Moreno, Lisa Powers, Tariq Rahman, and Andrew Wong; Line Producer: Kathy Wolf; Associate Producers: Lily Spencer, Keith Lane, Ben Ragunton, Dany Gange, Kevin T. Peterson, Rome Keshav Chopra, Bhavna Singh, Richard Duquette, and Bonni Ellis; Cinematographer: Martin Bouchard; Colourist: Nicolas Fournier; Art Director: Alexandre Piedon; VFX: Henry Lipatov; Sound: Bruno Carrières; Re-recording Mixer: Giulio Wehrli; Costumes: Josée Métivier; Makeup Artists: Steph Miramontes and Larysa Chernienko.

Morning After

LOG LINE

A young man discovers the fluidity of sexuality during a night of partying with friends. Should human relationships be defined by labels in the era of the Millennial generation? "Morning After" is an uplifting film on a topic rarely explored in cinema.

SYNOPSIS

Michael just came back to his hometown after spending two years abroad. His friend Edward has organized a welcome party in his honor. While only knowing Edward, Michael quickly becomes friendly with the rest of the gang as they get involved in a provocative game of chocolate tasting and French-kissing.

The openness of the group makes Michael come face to face with a dilemma he’s had for quite some time; of not only questioning his own sexuality, but the notion of sexual identity as a whole, and are labels really necessary?

After a storm that leaves them soaked in the middle of the night, Michael finds the answer to all his questions, the Morning After.

Patricia Chica

Director/Producer

BIOGRAPHY

Patricia Chica is a multiple award-winning Salvadorian-Canadian filmmaker. Through her filmmaking, Patricia Chica has helped bring awareness and contributed to causes around different social issues like HIV-AIDS, Blood Donation, Depression, Suicide Prevention, Homelessness, Social Justice, as well as LGBTQ, Aboriginal and Human Rights. Chica's main purpose is to use the language of cinema to delve into taboo and sometimes hard-hitting subject-matter that makes people think. Her films always privilege story and substance over style in order to inspire, transform, and affect its viewers positively.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES

Morning After is a poignant and moving coming of age tale that perfectly captures the challenges and nuances of a young man’s “sexual transcendence” as he finally decides to explore and accept his sexual desires, and release what he has been holding back. The decisions he makes, amid the high stakes for his impulses, make Morning After a gripping, touching, and contemporary film for a new open minded generation.

Today with everyone more curious about sexual diversity, a modern youth culture is emerging that is hungry for new cinematic themes. Morning After gives voice to an under-served audience craving characters and stories that reflect their own unique experience. With its roots firmly planted in a universal narrative with an stylized and artistic approach, Morning After depicts an emotional journey that will outlive its time and continue to be relevant as the LGBTQ+ community and its identity issues touches more and more the general audience.

The cinematography and musical soundtrack of Morning After serve as vital storytelling tools, interweaving an aesthetic that rhythmically conveys the shifting thematic and emotional dynamic of Michael’s journey into discovering his sexuality and the relationships he forms with others as well as with himself. As per my writer's intention, the script had subtle conflict. Therefore, in order to enhance the drama, I will push for a kinetic style in the look, as well as in the edit, implementing an intimate feel that conveys Michael’s intense internal transformation. The story is mainly told from his point of view.

The relationship between Michael and the four other characters: Edward, Dana, Teegan and Alex is at the center of this story. In addition to getting captivating performances, I love to use the dynamics of this visual medium (color, composition, textures, saturation, rhythm and music) to its maximum potential to bring the dialogue to life. It’s exciting for me as a filmmaker to create the moments where the story transcends the imagination and becomes a vivid reflection of the crossroads between reality and emotions.

One of my primary goals is to get the highest performances from my actors. Morning After is a dynamic character piece with a humanistic story at its core, giving actors plenty of material to craft deep, multi-layered performances with.

Thomas Vallières

(Michael)

BIOGRAPHY

Thomas Vallières is one of Quebec’s brightest up and coming stars. Born and raised all across Canada, Thomas likes to consider himself a proper emblem of the great country: bilingual, friendly, and perhaps a little culturally confused. Maybe foolishly, his childhood dream is still his main aspiration, ever since he first set foot on a stage in the second grade. After a somewhat successful film and television career in Montreal and Toronto, he was accepted to the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) where he is presently obtaining his Master’s in Classical Acting for the Dramatic Arts. Thomas starred in SXSW’s Game of Death (2017). He is the lead actor of Morning After (2017) a film selected in the Creative Minds Shorts showcase at the Short Film Corner of the 70th Cannes Film Festival.

Thomas was chosen for the role of Michael because he can carry the ambiguous balance between straight and gay and make his character believable within the context of this fluidity.
