Protagonist Pictures and mk2 films have come on board to jointly handle worldwide sales on the Un Certain Regard 2017 Official Selection April’s Daughter (Las Hijas de Abril), from Cannes award winning writer / director Michel Franco (Chronic, After Lucia, Daniel and Ana) and executive producer Tim Roth, it was announced today by Protagonist Pictures CEO Mike Goodridge and Juliette Schrameck, Managing Director of mk2 films. The Spanish language feature from Mexico is Franco’s fourth film to be invited to the Cannes Film Festival.
Starring Emma Suarez (Julieta, The Next Skin) as April, the film tells the story of 17-year-old Valeria who is pregnant by her teenage boyfriend, but hasn't informed her absent mother April. When her sister Clara goes behind her back and calls their mother, she arrives full of concern, support and tenderness. But once the baby is born, it soon becomes clear why Valeria wanted to keep April as far away as possible.
The film also stars Ana Valeria Becerril, Joanna Larequi (Charity), Enrique Arrizon (Desterrados), and Hernán Mendoza (After Lucia).
As well as writing and directing the film, Franco produced April’s Daughter through his Lucía Films production company. Lorenzo Vigas (From Afar) and Moises Zonana (Chronic, After Lucia) are also producers of the film. Executive producers on the project are Rodolfo Cova, David Zonana, Gabriel Ripstein and Academy Award nominated actor Tim Roth. Roth (Rob Roy, Pulp Fiction) starred in and executive produced Franco’s first English language feature Chronic, winner of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival Best Screenplay Award. The film was nominated for two Film Independent Spirit Awards for Best Feature and Best Actor for Roth.
“We think Michel’s new film is his best yet,” said Protagonist CEO Mike Goodridge. “Anchored by a wonderfully deadpan performance by Emma Suárez, April’s Daughter is a film which will surprise, even stun audiences as its story unfolds. Protagonist Pictures and mk2 films will launch sales on the title in Cannes where they are co-repping worldwide rights. The two companies first partnered this year in Berlin on the market standout Cold War from Director Pawel Pawlikowski.
April’s Daughter is the third film in the festival for Protagonist who are also handling the Directors’ Fortnight selections The Rider, from Chloé Zhao, and The Florida Project, co-written and directed by Sean Baker starring Willem Dafoe. mk2 films’ Cannes line up also includes in Official Selection in Competition Radiance, written and directed by Naomi Kawase (An, Still the Water), and in Official Selection Un Certain Regard Until the Birds Return, co-written and directed by Karim Moussaoui (The Days Before).
As writer, director and producer, Michel Franco’s acclaimed body of work includes After Lucia, which won Best Film in Un Certain Regard in 2012, Daniel and Ana, nominated for Cannes’ Golden Camera Award in 2009 as well as Chronic. Franco produced 600 Miles (directed by Gabriel Ripstein), which won the Best First Feature award at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival, and From Afar, directed by Lorenzo Vigas, which won the Golden Lion award at the 2015 Venice Film Festival. Franco is currently developing several feature films and TV projects through his production company Lucia Films.

Brian O'Shea, The Exchange C.E.O., announced today that The Exchange acquired international sales rights of horror-comedy feature TRAGEDY GIRLS, which world premiered at the 2017 SXSW festival.
The Exchange will be introducing and screening TRAGEDY GIRLS to international buyers at the upcoming 2017 Cannes Marché, May 17-26.
CAA is handling domestic rights; a US deal will be announced shortly.
Currently, TRAGEDY GIRLS has a 100% tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie features the star-studded cast of Brianna Hildebrand (DEADPOOL), Alexandra Shipp (X-MEN: APOCALYPSE), Jack Quaid (THE HUNGER GAMES), Kevin Durand (X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE), and Craig Robinson (THIS IS THE END). TRAGEDY GIRLS is directed by Tyler MacIntyre (PATCHWORK) and produced by Anthony Holt, Armen Aghaeian, Edward Mokhtarian, Cameron Van Hoy, Tara Ansley, and Craig Robinson. Kerry Rhodes from The Comeback Kids serves as an executive producer on the film. It is written by Tyler MacIntyre andChris Lee Hill.

In a war torn country, a female writer and teacher has to accompany two of her students on a life changing journey.
Sareh is a school teacher who writes comic strips. Due to a happening, she has to start a journey with two of her students to take them to their fathers. During the journey she tries to make them calm by telling them a part of the last story she has written. Regarding that the story is sort of related to her own past and nostalgia she herself gets submerged in it as well as the kids. In the middle of their journey they discover a cave which has been in Sareh's childhood imagination and she had described it in her story. However the discovery of this cave in real world makes her realize a truth about her childhood and makes her love the hero of her story. She finds out that the man who is the hero of her story is not just an imaginary person but a real character who had made her childhood world beautiful with his kind behavior and nice stories. Now she has just realized that her heaven like daily life is no longer attractive to her and she is determined to embrace the hardships and find her lost hero along with the search of her students' fathers; unaware of the fact that she herself is becoming a hero for her students by her behavior and stories just like her own childhood hero with whom she had gone on a journey.

At the urging of Dr. Junod, the GHQ agrees to provide 15 tons of medical supplies to the city. Dr. Junod devotes himself to the treatment of victims of the bombing. When he meets Gen. Douglas MacArthur later, the general asks him, "What motivates you to work so hard for people?"
"Love," replies Dr. Junod. This is the answer to their question that Mii and Yuko, who have watched Dr. Junod at work, were looking for. Having learned what motivated him, they return to the present. Their eyes glow with the warm, strong light of love.

1930, Paris, the film The Golden Age is a scandal and Luis Buñuel, who thought he was destined to be the star of surrealism, is left with nothing. He is offered a documentary project on one of the poorest places in Spain, Las Hurdes, but he has no money.
His friend the sculptor Ramón Acín buys a lottery ticket while jokingly promising to finance the film with it. He wins and keeps his promise.
The harshness of Las Hurdes and the extreme misery of its people affect Buñuel deeply. Reality, dreams, memories of his childhood and of Salvador Dalí intermingle in his mind, endangering the production and his friendship with Ramón. From there will emerge the Buñuel of the future.
