Protagonist Pictures Picks Up Directors' Fortnight Selection THE RIDER
The rider director
Protagonist Pictures has come on board to handle worldwide sales on the Directors’ Fortnight 2017 Official Selection The Rider, written and directed by Chloé Zhao (Songs My Brothers Taught Me), it was announced today by Protagonist Pictures CEO Mike Goodridge. This is Zhao’s second feature and second film selected for Directors’ Fortnight.
Based on his true story, the film stars Brady Jandreau along with Tim Jandreau, Lilly Jandreau, Lane Scott and Cat Clifford. While visiting the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota for her first feature Songs My Brothers Taught Me, Zhao connected with a group of Lakota cowboys including Brady and wrote The Rider around his tragic and ultimately universal story.
Once a rising star of the rodeo circuit, young cowboy Brady is warned that his competition days are over after a tragic riding accident. Back home, Brady finds himself wondering what he has to live for when he can no longer do what gives him a sense of purpose: to ride and compete. In an attempt to regain control of his fate, Brady undertakes a search for new identity and tries to redefine his idea of what it means to be a man in the heartland of America.
“The Rider is a film of great beauty and poetry,” said Goodridge. “I was a huge admirer of Chloé’s first feature SongsMy Brothers Taught Me, and her story of the young cowboy Brady is another indelible portrait of contemporary rural Americans. Brady – playing himself as Brady Blackburn – is magnetic on screen and the soulfulness of his presence is unforgettable."
The project was produced by Highwayman Films (Zhao’s company), Bert Hamelinck and Sacha Ben Harroche of Caviar Films, and Mollye Asher. Caviar’s Michael Sagol and Jasper Thomlinson serve as executive producers.
Protagonist Pictures will launch sales on the title in Cannes. The company is co-repping the domestic rights with WME Global. The Rider is one of two projects selected for Directors’ Fortnight that Protagonist is handling – the second is The Florida Project, co-written and directed by Sean Baker starring Willem Dafoe.
Chloé Zhao is the Chinese writer, director and producer whose 2015 feature debut Songs My Brothers Taught Me premiered in US Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival followed by its Directors’ Fortnight selection. The film was nominated for three 2016 Independent Spirit Awards.

This is the story of two people meeting. It’s also the story of a portrait, in which immutable Chinese art meets Occidental art.
In the middle of the 18th century, the Jesuit, Jean Denis Attiret, was one of the official painters of China’s imperial court. He was given the honourable task of painting the portrait of Empress Ulanara. This former concubine, who became empress following the death of Emperor Qien Long’s first wife, had a very particular destiny. Rejected and humiliated by the emperor, she found herself alone and abandoned by all at the end of her life – a sort of precursory romantic figure. Nothing remains of her except her portrait with its Joconde like enigmatic sensuality.
The film recounts the feverish moment when the Chinese empress meets the Jesuit painter, a moment when the electric relationship between the painter and his model is caught up in the constraints of the court and its rigid rules of etiquette, and in the most extreme cultural differences.

The Dutch comics hero Hendrik IJzerbroot – Agent 327 – is a secret agent working for the Netherlands secret service agency. For the feature film a new story is currently being developed, re-using elements from the early comics.
In this Cold-War era, Agent 327 stumbles across clues that lead him uncover a secret weapon conspiracy - which goes all the way to the top of the Netherlands government. When Agent 327 confronts his Chief about it, he's told to stay off the case.Hendrik, loyal to his vow to serve the people, embarks on his own to uncover the plot, which could tip the balance of world power. The Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival unveils the first 8 films from the official selection of its 17th edition (30 June – 8 July 2017). These new cinematic gems are but an appetizer for the rest of the programme, and will be shown as part of diverse sections such as the INTERNATIONAL COMPETITON and NEW CINEMA FROM ASIA, as well as out of competition crossover showings of FILMS OF THE THIRD KIND and ULTRA MOVIES midnight screenings. It’s going to be epic!
