Cherchez l'idole, 1962

J'étais un grand fan de Johnny.

Peccato,   je ne suis pas à Paris pour voir ces films.

Johnny appeared in over forty films, usually as a spotlighted musical performer only,  but occasionally in a full proper role, as for example, in Godard's "Détective", 1985.

One film from 1962, "Chercher l'idole" has Johnny (then only nineteen) performing a rousing rock version of "Bonne chance" on a bus out in the country in a style that made many think of him as the French Elvis Presley.

This sequence alone made the Boisrond film memorable although it featured every yeah-yeah star of the period as well.

Hallyday was once called "the French Elvis".  The Daily Beast described Hallyday as, "a hip swiveling, leather-clad Gallic answer to Elvis Presley who shook up his home country’s music scene with American-style rock-n-roll and bad-boy antics." He remained largely unknown outside the Francophone world, and was sometimes described as "the biggest rock star you've never heard of" in English-speaking countries. He was made Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1997, France's highest civilian award.  Johnny passed away in December 2017 at the age of 74. 800,000 people lined the Champs Élysées to pay tribute at his funeral procession.
