TheRotterdam International Film Festival(25 January – 5 February 2017)has championed the presentation of works by talented up-and-coming filmmakers and also features them prominently in the competition sections. This year sees SELF-CRITICISM OF A BOURGEOIS DOG by Julian Radlmaier (faktura film, DFFB) having its world premiere in the Bright Future Award Competition. THE BURGLAR by Hagar Ben Asher (DE/IL/FR, Rohfilm) has the international premiere in the Hivos Tiger Competition. Four films with German involvement can be seen in the short films competition.
This is where AUGUST by Omer Fast (Filmgalerie 451), FROM SOURCE TO POEM by Rosa Barba (Studio Rosa Barba) and WHAT THE HEART WANTS by Cécile B. Evans (DE/GB/BE/AU) are all having their world premieres. In addition, another nine German shorts can be seen in the festival program.
The next generation of German documentary filmmakers has also been invited to Rotterdam: WHEN PAUL CAME OVER THE SEA (ALS PAUL ÜBER DAS MEER KAM), the second feature-length film by Jakob Preuss (Weydemann Bros.), will have its international premiere in the Bright Future sidebar, Atef Ben Bouzid's first feature-length film CAIRO JAZZ MAN (IckeKreuzberg, SLFilm) will be celebrating its world premiere in Voices: Scopitone, and DONKEYOTE by Chico Pereira (DE/GB/ES, Sutor Kolonko) will do likewise in Voices as well as being nominated for the Big Screen Award.
MANIFESTO by Julian Rosefeldt (DE/AU/HK, Julian Rosefeldt) will be coming directly from Sundance to Rotterdam for its European premiere in Bright Future.
Julian Radlmaier, who studied Directing at the German Film & Television Academy Berlin (dffb), had already presented his medium-length film A PROLETARIAN WINTER'S TALE as a world premiere in Rotterdam in 2014. SELF-CRITICISM OF A BOURGEOIS DOG (SELBSTKRITIK EINES BÜRGERLICHEN HUNDES) is a political comedy with magical twists. A bourgeois dog confesses how he was transformed from a filmmaker into a canine by failing in love, picking apples and revolution. Julian Radlmaier's first feature will be shown after its Rotterdam premiere in the Perspektive deutsches Kino sidebar at the 2017 Berlinale.
In total, 39 German films and co-productions can be seen at the 46th Rotterdam International Film Festival.
