The German film TONI ERDMANN by Maren Ade (DE/AT/MC, Komplizen Film, Missing Link Films) is on the short list of the last nine films for the 89th Oscar® in the Best Foreign Language Film category. This was announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
The line-up also includes the German co-productions LAND OF MINE by Martin Zandvliet (DK/DE, Amusement Park Film) for Denmark with the German SHOOTING STAR Louis Hofmann and PARADISE by Andrei Konchalovsky (RU/DE, Drife Filmproduktion) for Russia.
Five titles will then be selected from the nine films and these will then receive a nomination and take part in the final selection for the Oscar® in this category. The Academy will announce the Oscar® nominations on 24 January 2017. A total of 85 countries had submitted films for the Best Foreign Language Film category.
The Oscar® ceremony is held in the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on 26 February 2017.
TONI ERDMANN was selected in August 2016 by an independent expert jury appointed by German Films to be the German candidate for the Best Foreign Language Film category.
The third feature film by Maren Ade is a veritable international success story which began with its world premiere in competition at the 2016 Festival de Cannes. Feted frenetically by the industry, audience and critics alike, the film received the international film critics association's FIPRESCI Prize as the Best Competition Film. During the rest of the year, TONI ERDMANN was also shown at other leading festivals, including Toronto, San Sebastian, London, Moscow, Karlovy Vary, the Venice Days, Telluride or New York, and there's been a steady flow of awards such as five European Film Awards (Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter, Best Actress, Best Actor), the LUX Film Prize of the European Parliament and the FIPRESCI Prize - both for Best Film of the Year -, or the Prize for the Best Foreign Language Film of the New York Film Critics Circle as well as a Golden Globe® nomination. In addition, the film appears in the lists of the year's best films as published by leading international (film) media.
The sales company The Match Factory has sold TONI ERDMANN to over 100 territories. In France, it was seen by over 340,000 cinema-goers and has clocked up around 740,000 admissions in Germany. The film will be released theatrically in the USA on 25 December 2016.
