The Berlinale special series on Indigenous cinema is continuing its journey: Latin America is the focus of this year’s film programme, with 18 fictional and documentary films made between 1986 and 2014.
The series will open with the stunning documentary Eco de la Montaña (Echo of the Mountain, 2014) by Mexican director and cinematographer Nicholás Echevarría at the CineStar IMAX® on February 6, 2015. This multifaceted portrait of artist Santos de la Torre also gives profound insight into the life and rituals of the Huichol people in the mountainous landscape of the Sierra Madre Occidental.
In exploring film as a medium, Indigenous filmmakers are beginning to reclaim their own image by questioning the stereotypic depiction and appropriation of themselves by others. “Over the past decades they have begun to question, and to break away from the colonial gaze, often utilising film-in-film to turn the camera on themselves and their environments to develop unique cinematic imagery,” Maryanne Redpath, NATIVe curator, remarks on the film programme.
Once again a number of side events will supplement the screenings of NATIVe films. At Berlinale Open House, happening in the Audi Berlinale Lounge on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, NATIVe guests will participate in two storytelling slams - sharing their stories with the audience, who will also be encouraged to spontaneously contribute to the event.
Furthermore, a moderated discussion on how oral tradition finds its way to the big screen will be held together with the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut Preußischer Kulturbersitz.
Teaming up with international partners, NATIVe will for the first time have a stand at the European Film Market (EFM).
